Gilbert R. Gilbertson, 89, of Sheboygan, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice surrounded by his family.
Born July 4, 1927 in Sheboygan, Gilbert was a son of the late Rudolph and Mary Schmatz Gilbertson. He attended Sheboygan area schools and graduated from Central High School. He then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army Airforce from 1944- 1946. On February 3, 1951, he was united in marriage to Rena M. Del Bianco in Kohler, WI. They celebrated nearly sixty three years of marriage before Rena preceded him in death on January 31, 2013.
Gilbert was a foreman for the R.A. Manning Company before his retirement. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. He was a founding member of the Binversie Sportsmans Club and enjoyed spending time up north. He loved traveling in his early retirement years with his brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Betty. He also enjoyed fishing and grouse hunting with his grandsons along with deer and turkey hunting. He enjoyed gardening and watching the birds, especially looking forward to the return of the orioles each spring.
He is survived by his two children, Donna (Jim) Noel, Sheboygan, and Glenn (fiancé Dawn Schlichting) Gilbertson, Sheboygan Falls; his two grandsons, Brian (Trinity) Noel, Almond, WI, and Eric (Shelly) Noel, Sheboygan; three great grandchildren, Aubrey, Zach and Hannah Noel; his brother, Gerald Gilbertson, Milwaukee, his sister, Jean (Lloyd) Kaat, Elkhart Lake; and a sister-in-law, Mary Taubenheim, Sheboygan; special family members, Destiny (Jacob) Frye and their children, Evan and Ella; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents and his wife, Rena, he was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Gilbertson, Anton "Tony" Del Bianco, Jeannie (Francis) Junk, Angeline (John) Diener, and Bill Taubenheim.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 828 Huron Avenue. The Rev. Matthew Widder will celebrate the Mass. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Entombment with full Military Honors will take place in the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
The family would like to thank Dr. Heidi Bemis at Sheboygan Aurora Memorial Hospital and the caring nurses and staff of the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for all of the loving support and compassion provided to Gilbert and his family.
