Zona Mae Schmitz, 87, of Sheboygan, passed away Saturday morning, April 9, 2016 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI, surrounded by her family.
Born January 30, 1929 in St. Cloud, WI, Zona was a daughter of the late Regina Morgen and John Koch. She attended St. Cloud area schools and graduated from St. Mary's Springs High School. She continued her education at Silver Lake College, graduating with a teaching degree and a minor in botany. She attained her masters degree from the U.W. Oshkosh. On May 30, 1950, she was united in marriage to Andrew C. Schmitz at St. Claudius Catholic Church in St. Cloud. They were married for 62 years before Andrew preceded her in death on November 13, 2012.
Zona and Andrew owned and operated a Borden's Dairy distributorship for many years. Following her college education, she taught in Sheboygan area schools for 20 years including St. Dominic, Grant, and Sheridan Schools. She had a strong faith and was an active member of St. Dominic Catholic Church where she was as a member of the choir, a Eucharistic Minister, St. Dominic Dynamos and ran the religious education program. She volunteered many places including the Sheboygan County Historical Society, the Sojourner Truth House and the Red Cross. She enjoyed traveling with her family through all 50 states and abroad. She kept active by slalom water skiing into her 70's and skydiving into her 80's. She loved nature, camping, quilting, spending time with her girl friends and teaching her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Dan (Pat) Schmitz, Cedarburg, Teri (Tom) Magennis, Wethersfield, CT, Jane (Mike) MacLean, Town of Middleton, and Andrea (Keith) Loppnow, Columbus; her grandchildren, Christopher Schmitz, Jaclyn Schmitz, Kelly (Kyle) Magennis Crown, Michael Magennis, Alisa Magennis, Regina MacLean, Daniel MacLean, Brad MacLean, Denis Loppnow and Nikolai Loppnow; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She is further survived by her loving pug, Kia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Friday April 15, 2016 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 21st & Geele Avenue. Fr. Steven Kortendick will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Inurnment will take place in Ledgeview Mausoleum.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
