Walter Herman

August 18, 1925 — February 6, 2013

Walter Herman, 87, of S. 16th Street, passed away Wednesday evening, February 6, 2013 at the Sheboygan Senior Community. Born August 18, 1925 in Sheboygan, Walter was a son of the late Christ and Dora Rusch Herman. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Central High School. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946, serving in both the European and Pacific Theaters. On May 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Knefelkamp in Sheboygan. Walter was a police officer for the City of Sheboygan for many years. He then became the director of security at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, retiring in 1987. He previously worked at Zarlings Warehouse Sales. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was on the Special Needs Committee,worked in the food pantry and volunteered at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital for many years. He was also a member of the Destroyers Escort Sailors Association. Walter also volunteered at the Sheboygan County Food Pantry. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou; his sister, Lydia Mueller; nieces, Pat Forkner, Kohler, Diane (Jim) Darkow, Sheboygan and Gail Darrah, Hoffman Estates, IL; great nieces and nephews, Lt. Col. Anthony (Stephanie) Forkner, Christopher Forkner, Garrett (Stacey) Forkner, Jeffrey (Sara) Bahrs, Justin Bahrs, Jennifer (Matt) Olson, Nancy (Ken) Woodward, John (Karen) Chavlovich, David Chavlovich and Mark Chavlovich; numerous great great nieces and nephews, other relatives and special friends, Gene and Sarah Moe, Sheboygan. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Christ (Kathleen) Herman, a sister, Marie (Stephen) Chavlovich and a brother-in-law, Fred Mueller. Funeral services for Walter will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013 at the Lippert-Olson Funeral Home, 1132 Superior Avenue. The Revs. Ric and Kathy Olson will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place in Sheboygan Falls Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in his name. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and the Sheboygan Senior Community for all of their loving care and support.
