Ruth E. Sumner, 90, of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2017 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice surrounded by her family.
Born January 17, 1927 in Milwaukee, Ruth was a daughter of the late John and Alice Elliott Dahm. She attended Milwaukee area schools. On March 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to Stanton H. Sumner, Sr. in Milwaukee. They were married for 57 years before Stanton preceded her in death on March 13, 2003.
Ruth was a homemaker who with her husband owned and operated the Palace Inn in Sheboygan and the Island Restaurant in Elkhart Lake. They also ran Stan's Disposal Service. She was faithful member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church where she served as the custodian for over 30 years. Ruth's favorite hobby of cake making turned into business for many years until well into her 80's. Ruth was a member of TOPS for 27 years and KOPS for 20 years. She loved plants, gardening, and her grapes but her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Alice Brown, Sheboygan, Keith (Colleen) Sumner, Plymouth, Wendy (Jeff) Elgin, Plymouth, Clarice "Cookie" (Steven) Walczak, Sheboygan, and John Sumner, Athelstane; 16 grandchildren, Scott Sumner, Tim Sumner, Patrick (Amy) Sumner, Tracy Sumner, Ann Sumner, Matthew Brown, Keith, Jr. (Sarah) Sumner, Nicole (John) Schneider, Amy (Jason) Luedtke, Ben (Adam) Berry, Christina (Joel) Williams, Nadine Bock, Spencer Walczak, Jennifer (Adam) Young, Nathan (Kayla) Sumner, and Cherish (Kevin) Guseck; 20 great grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Vicki Sumner, Plymouth; her sisters, Carol Luibbaka and Milly Frey; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is further survived by her special friends from Taylor Parkway and Luther Memorial Church.
Besides her parents and husband, Stanton, Sr., she was preceded in death by her son, Stanton, Jr. her infant son and daughter, her son-in-law, M. Jay Brown, two grandchildren, Michael Griessmeyer and Jacob Brown, her brother, John (Eleanor) Dahm, and her two brothers-in-law, Wayne Luibbaka and Donald Frey, Sr.
Funeral services will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 1127 Eisner Avenue, Sheboygan. The Rev. Matthew Peters will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will take place in Gardens of Peace Mausoleum.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
