Richard E. Downs, 83, of Sheboygan, passed away Wednesday morning, February 3, 2016 at Golden Living Center where he had been residing.
Born October 4, 1932 in Portsmouth, NH, Richard was a son of the late Theodore and Elizabeth Knowlton Downs. He attended schools in Hew Hampshire. He then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1954 during the Korean War. Following the war, he was united in marriage to Lois DeKarske on February 14, 1954 in Sheboygan. She passed away on November 21, 1954. He then married Marcia Neustel on November 22, 1958 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Richard was a machinist for Kohler General for 28 years, retiring in 1991. He previously worked at the Hayssen Manufacturing. He was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church and a former member and Deacon at Christ Lutheran Church. He belonged to the International Association of Machinists, Lodge 251 and was a Boy Scout leader for Pack 72 for 9 years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his former wife, Marcia Neustel, Sheboygan; his children, Barbara (John) Kimmeth, DePere, Steven Downs, Sheboygan, Randall Downs, Sheboygan, David Downs, Manitowoc, and Michael Downs, Ironwood, MI; six grandchildren, Bradley (Jessica) Steele, Stacy Steele, Kayla Benirski, Crystal (C.J.) Coffey, Chad Downs,and Jennifer (Anthony) Dickson; great grandchildren, Madalyn, Abigail, Bailey and Carson Steele, and Brayden, Conner and Tyler Dickson; his sister, Gloria (John) Barnes, Portsmouth, NH; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents and first wife, Lois, he was preceded in death by his son, James Downs, his brother, Theodore Downs, Jr., and his sister, Dottie Oliver.
Funeral services for Richard will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1132 Superior Avenue. The Rev. Alan Kretschmar will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place in Wildwood Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established in his name for St. Paul Lutheran School.
