Raymond S. Kohlmann, 90, of Plymouth, formerly of Sheboygan, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, October 19, 2017 at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.
Born January 11, 1927 in Taycheedah, WI, Raymond was a son of the late William and Mathilda Sabel Kohlmann. He attended Sheboygan Falls schools and Sheboygan Falls High School. Ray left high school in 1944 to join the U.S. Navy where he served in W.W.II. Following the war, he returned to finish High School and graduated 1949. He then reenlisted and served during the Korean War and retired from the Seabee's Navy Reserves. On November 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Vernetta S. Krepsky at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sheboygan Falls.
Ray worked various jobs in Sheboygan County retiring after 24 years from Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co. in 1989. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. He enjoyed time at the family cottage in Florence, WI deer hunting and fishing. He loved the time with his family playing cards and dominos on game nights. He was especially fond of Faye's Pizza and Gosse's steak sandwiches. He was an avid Packer fan, enjoyed woodworking in his basement with his tools, and polka dancing.
Raymond made friends wherever he went. Recently, he enjoyed his weekly sheepshead game with his new found friends at Briarwood Cottages in Plymouth. On September 12, 2012, Ray was a chosen participant to go on his Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. for his dedicated service in W.W.II and the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vernetta, Plymouth; his seven children, RaeNetta Nickel, Howards Grove, Lindel (Harry) Lambrecht, Sheboygan, Jeffrey (Tammy) Kohlmann, Sheboygan, Diana (Larry) Mahloch, Sheboygan, Kevin Kohlmann, Newton, Michael (Natalie) Kohlmann, Sheboygan, and Sarah (Chris) Hackl, Plymouth; ten grandchildren, Ben (Emily) Nickel, Tyler (Kate) Nickel, Matthew (Jenn) Lambrecht, Melissa (Lance) Hahn, Holly (Eric) Stangel, Emily Kohlmann, Shelby (Josh) Reichert, Elsey Kohlmann, Jake Hackl and Adrian Hackl; 10 great grandchildren, Calla, Leo, an expected great grandchild in February, Brenna, Eleyna, Beckett, Lincoln, Madison, Camden and Aria; two sisters, Virginia Pitchler and Rose Marie French; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Bernice Brown, his brothers-in-law, Ken Brown, Henry French, Don Pitchler, Warren Rhines, George Schultz and Earl Schultz.
Funeral services for Ray will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1132 Superior Avenue. Fr. Gideon Buya will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Entombment will take place in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum.
A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.
The family would like to thank all those who came to help Raymond on Thursday including the staff of Plymouth Walmart, Orange Cross Ambulance and Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.
