Nehemiah Lee Joseph Salchert lived a BIG life in 3.5 years. He was medically fragile, oh yes, but with a soldier strong spirit. He was SO ALIVE while he lived. Nehemiah passed away early Thursday morning, December 2, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
Nehemiah had a heart attack in the womb just before his birth. He has a twin brother who is just fine. Thanks to the amazing care he received by the providers at Children’s, he lived through what should have killed him. He developed an engaging personality. His smile lit up the room. His eyes were bright and full of fun.
Thanks to foster care and adoption he didn’t live at the hospital his entire life but had a home and a family and so many people who loved him and that he loved right back. He loved PEOPLE and MUSIC and PEOPLE. He had some serious FOMO (Fear of missing out). He loved showers.
He loved to steal people's phones! Sometimes, right out of their pockets. He thoroughly enjoyed throwing things in the trash (like the Bose and TV remote). He would come home from another stay in the hospital and walk into the kitchen, pulling all the Tupperware out on the floor. He threw the lids everywhere. He'd bang the cookie sheets together, and then continue to walk around the house like he owned the place. And he did indeed, own it.
Every time the phone or the doorbell rang, he was startled and his face lit up and he'd run to the door because he knew it was about him or for him. Our phone was constantly ringing, texting, and emailing....on his behalf.
He was a walking miracle. A display of God’s sustaining grace and goodness. He took his last breath peacefully, cuddled by his family and with Jesus Loves Me in his ears.
We are forever grateful for his beautiful little self, for his smile that could brighten the darkest day, and for all the smooches he gave. Nehemiah aka Lil Bug – you lit up our world! And we are thankful to know that your light will continue to bless so many.
