Michael L. McMurray, 61, of Sheboygan, passed away Tuesday evening, January 12, 2016 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice following his five year battle with cancer. Mike was an inspiration to many. He gave it his all and never lost his sense of humor or optimism. He fought a good fight but cancer fought dirty, and cancer won.
Born April 17, 1954 in Sheboygan, Michael was a son of Janice L. Herbst McMurray and the late James E. McMurray. He attended area schools and graduated from Sheboygan South High School in 1972. On June 4, 1977, he was united in marriage to Melanie A. Ehlert at Terry Andre State Park in Sheboygan.
Mike worked for the City of Sheboygan as a lead man for 33 years before retiring in 2011. He enjoyed traveling with Melanie and they were able to take their last trip together in December. Being a Civil War history buff, their travels allowed him to visit many Civil War sites and battlefields. Due to the generosity of a friend, Mike had the great opportunity to fire a Civil War cannon this past summer. He was an avid waterfowl hunter and enjoyed his many different hunts with close friends around the US and Canada. Michael was a committee member of the Sheboygan, Sheboygan Greenwing, Plymouth and Shoreline Chapters of Ducks Unlimited. He held several state positions before serving as the Wisconsin State Chairman of DU.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie; his mother, Janice McMurray, Sheboygan; his brother, Scott (Jean) McMurray, North Fond du Lac; his sister, Geri (Jay) Rusch, Sheboygan Falls; his mother-in-law, JoAnn Ehlert, Sheboygan; sister-in-law, Cathy (Greg) Voskuil, Glenbeulah; his brother-in-law, Ken (Olivia Perry) Ehlert, Wadsworth, IL; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James, and his father-in-law, Alex Ehlert.
A celebration of Michael's life will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1132 Superior Avenue. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the celebration.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kumar and staff of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center and the nurses and staff of the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for all of their loving care and support.
