Maria Julia Contreras, 87, of Sheboygan, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Holy Family Medical Center in Manitowoc. Born April 19, 1928 in El Salvador, Julia was a daughter of the late Domingo and Julianna Portillo Contreras. She attended schools in El Salvador where she graduated from nursing school. Julia was a nurse for many years in El Salvador until she moved to Houston, TX in 1980. She became certified as a nurse in Texas and continued working until her retirement in 1993. She loved to travel, especially to visit her family and grandchildren. Her greatest passion was nursing, being able to help others and make a difference in their lives. Her door was always open to family and friends who needed an opportunity to better themselves. Julia was a practicing Catholic but attended the Pentecostal Church Venid A Mi in Sheboygan with her daughter, Sonia. She is survived by her four children, Miriam (Jesus) Loera, Milwaukee, Sonia (Antonio) Garay, Sheboygan, Axinia (Mario) Zepeda and Carmen (Javier) Contreras, both of Houston, TX; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Aristides Contreras, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services for Julia will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1132 Superior Avenue. Pastor Severo Medina will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Venid A Mi in her name or the charity of your choice. The Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Julia's arrangements.
