Luetta Barber, 75, formerly of 1811 S. 11th St., died Friday, November 9, 2012, at Rocky Knoll Health Center, Plymouth WI, where she had been a resident for almost 4 years. Born May 31, 1937, in Sheboygan, Luetta was the daughter of the late William and Linda Salzwedel Pagelow. Luetta was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1955 On January 7th 1956, she married Peter Van Wyk. On May 11, 1978 she married Reginald Barber. Luetta was employed for 27 years by the Sheboygan County Comprehensive Health Center as a CNA, retiring in 1997. She was also active in AFSCME Local 2427, serving as secretary for 20 years. She attended many of the ASCME conventions and served on the elections and credentials committees. She was a Labor Council Delegate and Executive Board Member and was named Member of the Year for 1995 AFSCME Local 2427. Luetta was a trustee for Retirees Chapter 62 subchapter 7. She was a member of the Sheboygan County Democratic Party and served on their Executive Board and was appointed by Mayor James Schramm to the Office of Citizen's Advocate on the Common Council in 1998. Mrs. Barber was a 4-H Leader, from 1968-1973 she assisted with judging the Sheboygan County Fair, she judged music and drama festivals and she entered the Dress The Doll Contest that Citizen's Bank held each December and won prizes for her dolls. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, sewing, baking, cross-stitch, reading, big band music, dancing, parties and traveling. Luetta was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Luetta is survived by her three children, William (Mary) Van Wyk, Steven (Jill) Van Wyk, Renee Van Wyk, all of Sheboygan; five grandchildren, Stacy (Jon) Backus, Melissa (Robert) Pack, Derek (special friend Hannah Flasher), Lauren Porten, Megan Porten, Samantha Van Wyk; five great grandchildren, Dallas, Matt, Grace, Jack, Landin; five step-children and their families, Reginald (Joanne) Barber, Dennis Barber, Edward (Kate) Barber, Thomas Barber, Ruth Ann Sramek, other relative and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Reggie, her daughter, Michelle Porten, grandson Shawn Van Wyk, and step-son Dean Barber and a close family friend Lloyd Boyce Funeral services will be held at 6:45 p.m., Monday, November 12, 2012, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1614 S. 23rd St., with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel, officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome at the church on Monday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service. Entombment will be in Gardens of Peace Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for Shriners Hospital of Milwaukee The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Rocky Knoll Health Center for the loving care they gave Luetta.
