Lu Giefer, 95, of Sheboygan, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, December 23, 2017 at her home.
She was born July 6, 1922, daughter of the late John and Alma Wolff Giefer in Sheboygan. The family moved to Kohler in 1927 and Lu moved back to Sheboygan in 1975.
Lu attended Holy Name grade and Kohler High Schools. She loved to learn and continued taking classes even after she retired. She was employed at the Kohler Co. for 46 years retiring in 1987. She also worked weekends at Bemis for several years. After retirement she volunteered at the Homespun Post.
During the 1960's and 1970's she was active in the Sheboygan Civil Air Patrol, gaining national acclaim for her information services. In January 1967, she was named Woman of the Month in the National CAP Times. In her younger years, she bowled, golfed and played tennis.
She and her sister Dorene started the roller skating for youth at Ravine Park in Kohler. She loved baseball and faithfully cheered for the Milwaukee Braves and then the Brewers, win or lose. She was an avid photographer and was always seen with a camera. Some of her happiest times were those spent with her nieces and nephews and later grand nieces and nephews and their children. She also loved cars and her convertibles were often seen in Sheboygan parades.
She is a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, its Mission Society, St. Ann's Society and a founding member of the Kohler Quarter Century Club. She was very vocal in her political opinions, never hesitating to let people know she was a Republican.
She happily shared her birthday with her niece Eileen Simenz and grand niece Kate Giefer.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Susan Messner, Sheboygan, Nancy (Jerome) Wagner, Florida, Eileen (Craig) Simenz, Sheboygan Falls, Gregory Hoerz, New York, Mare' Hoerz, Florida, John (Karen) Giefer, Texas, Maureen (Tom) Parrish, Mary Doherty, James (Carol) Giefer, all of Missouri. She is also survived by 16 grand nieces and nephews, Lisa Messner, Kristen (Scott) Kautzer, Sheboygan, Adam (Jennifer) Wagner, Florida, Olivia (Matthew) Zeman, Sheboygan Falls, Elliot Simenz, Sheboygan, Brandon Simenz, Plymouth, Parri (Brandon) Callahan, Ty (Sara) Parrish, Dru Parrish, Sean (Christy) Doherty, Patrick Doherty and Kate Giefer, all of Missouri, Scott Giefer, Joseph (Beth) Giefer and John Giefer, all of Texas, and Daniel (Stephanie) Doherty of Florida. Also 19 great grand nieces and nephews, and her canine buddy Casey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Ira and Gen Giefer, sister and brother-in-law, Dorene and Orville Hoerz, grand nephew Kevin Messner, nephew-in-law James Doherty and her four legged friends Spooky, Nellie and Ellie.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 600 Green Tree Road, Kohler. Fr. Dennis Van Beek will celebrate the Mass. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to St. John's Mission Society or Sheboygan County Humane Society.
