John L. Hanson, 64, of Howards Grove, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 5, 2013 at St. Nicholas Hospital. Born August 13, 1949 in Ironwood, MI, John was a son of the late Leo and Julia Staszek Hanson. He graduated from Hurley High School and continued his education at U.W. Platteville, U.W. Stout and Lakeland College, graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He then furthered his education at Lakeshore Technical College. On May 26, 1973, he was united in marriage to Janice L. Maxam in Appleton. John worked for 28 years at Sheboygan Paper Box Company. He then worked for Burger Boat in Manitowoc for five years. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ where he served as a Sunday morning counter,usher and volunteered with the annual Swiss steak dinner. He was an avid Packer fan, enjoyed bowling, woodworking and hunting. He also loved to garden. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jan; his two children, Lori (Bob) Schmidt, Howards Grove, and Jason Hanson, Sheboygan; his three grandchildren, Abby and Gabe Schmidt, and Gage Hanson; three brothers and a sister, Larry (Dorothy) Hanson, Sussex, WI, Gerry (Nancy) Hanson, Philadelphia, PA, Leo "Mickey" (Doreen) Hanson, Hurley, WI, and Kathy (Jim) Fraiser, MA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is further survived by his uncle, Bob Kangas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for John will take plat at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 13th & Lincoln Avenue. The Rev. Gregory Whelton will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established in his name. The Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with John's arrangements.
