John A. Zurheide

Born January 25, 1935 in Sheboygan, John was a son of the late Arno and Sophia Siewert Zurheide. He attended Pigeon River School, Central High School and the U.W. Sheboygan. John served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserves for 13 years from November 1952 to November 1965. On February 24, 1962, he was united in marriage to Ann S. Reklaitis at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church.
In 1949, John joined Zurheide Ice Cream Company, the family business, founded by his father Arno in 1925. He took the lead and became owner a decade later making ZIC a local favorite of many until 2008. He and Ann loved traveling around the US and Canada aboard their motor coach settling between Sheboyan and Pelican Lake Motorcoach Resort, Naples, Fl. There he enjoyed many years of friendships. Surviving 22 years of cancer, John made the most of his days, scootering about the Sheboygan river front and Pelican Lake greeting all who crossed his path.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Zurheide; his four children, Judy (Ian McNeice) Zurheide, Nantucket, MA, Wendy (Ricky) Koll, Kohler, Jack (Patricia) Zurheide, Key West, FL, and Debra (Michael) Schmidt, Sheboygan; his six grandchildren, Kyle Koll, Plymouth, Andrew Koll, Madison, Joseph and Thomas Schmidt, Sheboygan, Gabriela and Alejandra Zurheide, Key West, FL; his sister, Diane (Edward) Godec, Waunakee, Wi.; his brother-in-law, Joseph Reklaitis, Sheboygan Falls; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arno and Sophia, his two brothers, Arno Jr. and Alan, and his sister Audrey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 835 Huron Avenue. Fr. Gideon Buya will celebrate the Mass. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and Tender Hearts for all of their loving care and compassion. And to Jim & Mary Kummer for their long time friendship and support over the years. A special thank to Drs. Mark Bettag, Nicholas Barnes, Louie Coulis and Vera Stricevic for their years of passion and dedication to John’s well being.
