Helmuth L. Lautenschlager

April 25, 1917 — September 23, 2017

Helmuth Louis "Laudy" Lautenschlager, age 100, passed peacefully on September 23, 2017, at his residence, Harvest Home, in Howards Grove, Wisconsin. Mr. Lautenschlager was born April 25th, 1917 in Hilbert, Wisconsin the to the late Mary and Otto Lautenschlager.
Laudy was a great believer in education, golf, gardening and travel. He held an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a Masters degree in Education from Northwestern University and pursued advanced studies at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO.
Part of the Greatest Generation, Laudy served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater, where he henceforth taught his grandchildren the lyrics, "We joined the Navy to see the world / And what did we see? / We saw the sea."
On July 15, 1940, he married the incomparable Helena Marjorie Mason, also a great believer in education and travel as well as a wonderful mother to Barbara (Lautenschlager) Carbin (James) and grandmother to Steve Carbin of Madison, Wisconsin and Christine Carbin Devraj (Timothy) of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Laudy moved to Sheboygan in 1947 and worked as a teacher at Sheboygan North High School, a text book representative for the American Book Company, and as the Director of Adult Education at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan. He also thoroughly enjoyed his many wonderful friends that he made throughout his lifetime. Laudy lived long enough to take on a new alias, that of a great grandfather or "The Chief”. His Chiefdom consisted of Isabella (14), Natalie (11) and Lucy Devraj (8) all of New Orleans, Louisiana. He made a special point to spend time with them and until the last few years would fly down to New Orleans every Christmas.
Laudy traveled the world with Marge, bringing home stories of great adventures, interesting artifacts and color slides that were shown in their living room to their enraptured friends and family. After Marge's passing, Laudy continued his travels both alone and with his granddaughter, striking out to the wilds of China and South America, (two places Marge was fine with missing out on) where he hiked through the Amazon rain forest and went searching for iguanas in the Galapagos Islands. One of his last adventures was to climb Machu Picchu at the age of 91.
Laudy always promised that he would beat his mother's record and live to be 102. Given how strong willed he was, we were shocked he fell short of this admirable goal. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
Family graveside services will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Reach out and Read at reachoutandread.org or to the Honor Flight Network at honorflight.org.
The Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Laudy's arrangements.
