Gladys K. Holbrook, 104, a resident at Terrace Place in Sheboygan went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 12, 2017.
She was born November 29, 1912 in Silver Creek, WI, one of four daughters born to Herbert & Philomena Ehlenbeck Klug. She graduated at the age of sixteen as the Valedictorian of the Random Lake High School, class of 1929. On November 7, 1936, she was united in marriage to Glenn Holbrook at St. Paul's U.C.C. Church in Silver Creek. Glenn preceded her in death in February 1991 after 54 years of marriage.
Glenn and Gladys operated a turkey farm in Waldo, one of the first farms specializing in the raising of turkeys in the area. Later she became employed by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections west of Plymouth, initially operating as the Kettle Moraine Boys School and later as the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution. She was a gifted bookkeeper, serving as treasurer of many of the organizations she served, including Treasurer of the Town of Lyndon. After fourteen years of service at Kettle Moraine, she retired and moved to Sheboygan with Glenn in 1982.
She was an active church member all of her life, first St. Paul's in Silver Creek, and after her marriage to Glenn, the Waldo Methodist Church. Upon moving to Sheboygan she joined Wesley United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Waldo Kings Daughters of Wisconsin. She had a beautiful soprano voice, singing in her church choir for over sixty years, often singing for church events with her close friend Audrey Seaman.
Gladys always had a great love for the Milwaukee Brewers and was a strong and loyal fan, never missing a game. She became a national celebrity when she threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Milwaukee Brewers game in 2015 at the age of 102.
Both she and Glenn were outstanding card players and they often spent evenings playing cards with each other. Gladys was an avid gardener keeping a large garden at her homes in both Waldo and Sheboygan. She enjoyed crafting, providing Christmas ornaments and other crafts for her family for over fifty years. She celebrated reunions of her high school class yearly, until after their 83rd reunion with her school friend Carl Gerold until his death at the age of 101.
After Glenn's death, she continued to live at their home on S. 18th Street in Sheboygan until she was 101.
Gladys is survived by her three children, Attorney William Holbrook of Sheboygan, Susan Morgan of Fond du Lac, and Gary (Tammy) Holbrook of Waldo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two step great granddaughters. Her three sisters, Evelyn Heinen, Vivian Gale and Marvel Harrison, all of Sheboygan also survive her.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, her daughter-in-law, Christine Holbrook, her son-in-law, James Morgan, and brothers-in-law, Isadore Heinen, Clarence Gale, and Chester Harrison, Jr. and her sister-in-law, Hazel (Carl) Born.
Funeral services for Gladys will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 823 Union Avenue. The Rev. Ric Olson and Rev. Ann Bullis will co-officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place in Waldo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for Wesley United Methodist Church and St. Nicholas Hospice.
Gladys will be sadly missed as the very best mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Nicholas Hospice and Terrace Place for their compassionate care of their mother.
