On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, Catherine Jung Wood, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, passed away suddenly, despite the valiant efforts of the ER medical staff at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Hospital.
Cate was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved the countless friends she made throughout her life. With her husband and her son, she lived in Minneapolis, MN, Columbus, OH, and Charlotte, NC: but Sheboygan was always “home.” She loved Sheboygan, and “came home” with her husband, in 2002, to give-care to her aging mother.
Cate was a passionate-friend of Bill W. and a member of the AA fellowship for more than forty-two years. Cate led a loving, self-less life, dedicated to helping anyone who asked for help. Anyone. Old friends, new friends, friends-of-Bill W., and “newbies” could, and would, call her anytime of the day or night, and she would lovingly and caringly listen and provide comfort and counsel. She was a magnet to those in need. She aided hundreds, through her works in the AA program.
While living in Columbus, OH, Cate was one of nine, brain-storming, “rocking-chair ladies” who created and launched a recovery program they named Amethyst. Today, twenty-five- plus-years later, Amethyst is a nationally- recognized, model-recovery program, providing a stable environment for women and women with families, recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.
Here in Sheboygan, even as her health declined, Cate stayed-the-course, sponsoring, loving, befriending, and “working the program” on a more personal-level with countless men and women recovering from alcohol and chemical dependency. At the news of her passing, hundreds of her friends-in-recovery gathered to celebrate her selfless, life well-lived. She was loved and she will be missed.
Cate was also an eight-years-and-counting cancer survivor. COPD and diabetes added to her burden. Yet she rarely spoke about her problems, preferring to give herself to others in need.
Born on September 30, 1944, Cate was the daughter of Edgar J. and Gladys T. Jung. She was raised in Sheboygan. She attended U.S. Grant Elementary School and graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1962. She attended Monticello Junior College in Alton, IL and Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh. In the years that followed, she earned a master’s-degree-in-life, with honors.
Cate and William R. Wood met in high school; but didn't begin dating until Christmas, 1963. They fell in love and never looked back. They were engaged in the spring of 1966. They were married on September 3, 1966. On May 11, 1970, Cate and Bill were blessed by the birth of their son, David.
Cate was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, David and J. Peter Jung.
She is survived by her loving husband Bill; their son, David; David’s wife, Donna; her grand-daughter, Connor, and her grand-son, Ryan.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2019, when the lilacs are in full-bloom. She loved lilacs.
Her ashes will be spread on the shores of Lake Michigan. She loved Lake Michigan.
So, for now, "Bye-a Hunta". Cate, and her son, will understand.
