Betty J. Olson, 91, of Sheboygan passed away Sunday morning, April 6, 2014 at St. Nicholas Hospital. Born November 18, 1922 in Green Bay, WI, Betty was the eldest child of the late Frederick and Gladys Fraire Lewis. Betty attended school in Green Bay, graduating from East High School in 1941. In 1943, Betty enlisted in the Navy Reserves (W.A.V.E.S.), "the Women's Auxilliary Emergency Service". That is where she met her husband Elmer and married Elmer in 1945. She was honorably discharged in 1945 from the Ottumwa Naval Air Station. They were married for 58 years before Elmer preceded her in death on March 10, 2004. Betty worked for the Sheboygan Area Public School district from 1971 until retiring in 1985 in the Food Service Dept. She was an active member of Lutheran Memorial Church, the Red Hat Society and volunteered at the Salvation Army. She enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing, both camping and touring in their RV motor home and collecting various themed collector plates. She especially loved the visits and phone calls from the grandchildren and family. She is survived by her son, Alan and his wife Ati Olson of North Potomac, MD, and her two grandchildren, Dhiandra Olson and Skylar Olson of North Potomac, MD. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends. Besides her parents and husband Elmer, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marcella Koziol and two brothers, Neil and Frederick Lewis, Jr. Funeral services for Betty will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Luther Memorial Church, 1127 Eisner Avenue. The Rev. Matthew Peters will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Entombment will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for the Salvation Army or Campus Life. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Harmony House and the nurses, doctors and staff of St. Nicholas Hospital for all of their loving care and support. The Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Betty's arrangements.
