Bernadyne E. "Bernie" Swoboda, 95, of Sheboygan, passed away Friday evening, November 16, 2018 surrounded by her family at Countryside Manor where she had been residing.
Born August 4, 1923 in Whitelaw, WI, Bernadyne was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Reitmeyer Meyer. She attended Manitowoc area schools. On June 28, 1945 she was united in marriage to Gerald C. Swoboda at St. Boniface Church in Manitowoc. They were married for 41 years before Jerry preceded her in death on November 27, 1986.
Bernie worked at J.C. Penny's in Sheboygan for 25 years before her retirement in 1986. She was an active member of St. Dominic Catholic Church where she served as a sacristan and volunteered where needed. She also volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul, the Sheboygan food pantry, St. Nicholas Hospital and the American Red Cross. She was an excellent seamstress who enjoyed making Christmas tree skirts for her children and stockings for all of her grandchildren. Her greatest joy was spending time watching her grandchildren's activities. Jerry and Bernie loved to go camping and traveling around the United States.
She is survived by her children, Karen (Thomas) Stubler, Sheboygan, Mary (Dennis) Beck, Maquoketa, IA, Bill (Sue) Swoboda, Sheboygan, Faye (Dave) Ludens, Deerfield, WI, Lois (Don) Dassow, Rothschild, WI, Diane (Mark) Brotz, Pleasant Prairie, WI, Sue (Carl) Kuester, Waldo and Patty (Mike) Guenther, Sheboygan; nineteen grandchildren; thirty eight great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Besides her parents and her husband, Jerry, she was preceded in death by her grandson J.D. Kautzer, her sisters, Sister Ruth Meyer and Audrey Nickels, and her two brothers, Ray Meyer and Clarence Meyer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 23, 2018 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 21st & Geele Avenue. Father Matthew Widder will celebrate the Mass. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established in her name for St. Dominic Catholic Church and St. Vincent de Paul.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Countryside Manor and Heartland Hospice for all of their loving care and support.
