Ardell “Art” William Sebald,100, of Sewell, NJ, previously Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Advanced Subacute Rehabilatation Center where he had been residing for the past year.
Born March 17, 1920 in Sheboygan, Art was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Krueger) Sebald. He attended Starlight Grade School in the Town of Sheboygan Falls before working on the family dairy farm. On June 17, 1944, he married the love of his life, Betty Jane Preder at the Gibbsville Reformed Church in Gibbsville, WI. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2019.
As a young man he was employed by neighbors as a farmhand; he had a fleet of trucks that drove for Lakeside Canning Company, Anglo American Tanning Company and did general hauling; he raised cash crops and feeder pigs; worked for Agro Seed Company; the Sheboygan Glass Company; Diecast Corporation, DeBlay Excavating and Reliance before he ended his working career.
Art always enjoyed small and large game hunting; fishing with friends and family at Pine Lake, Sturgeon Bay and the Mississippi River; traveling with his wife Betty; playing a hand of Skat or Sheepshead; listening to polka music; but most of all he had a true love of spending time with his family.
Art recently celebrated becoming a Centurian when he turned 100 on March 17, 2020. Being in Covid lockdown he celebrated at his window with two TV stations present. He also survived the COVID-19 virus at the age of 100.
He was an avid gun collector and served as committee member for the Sheboygan County Chapter of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and a member of the NRA.
He is survived by his son, James L. Preder, Howards Grove; his daughter, Mary Ann (fiancé Peter Geyer) Ebenreiter, Clayton, NJ; his four grandchildren, Laura (Michael) Wirtshafter, Glassboro, NJ; Todd (Julie) Preder, Sheboygan Falls; Tricia (Cory) Hausner, Sheboygan and Jack (Gina) Ebenreiter, West Chester, PA; six great grandchildren, Stephanie Wirtshafter, Samuel Preder, Malayna Preder, Max Ebenreiter, Jacqueline Ebenreiter and Simone Upstill; one brother-in-law, Rollen “Dick” Preder, Oostburg, two sisters-in-law, Ellen Preder, Oostburg and Jane TenHaken, Oostburg; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 75 years, Betty Jane; his in laws Garret and Jenny (Dekker) Preder, two sisters, Rubina Reineking, Elmira Schwartz; two brothers, Carlen Sebald and Melvin Sebald; a daughter-in-law, Patricia “Pat” VanKleek; eleven brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; two nieces and six nephews, and numerous other distant relatives and friends
A funeral service for Art will be held on Monday, February 15, 2021 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (1810 North 13th Street) with the Rev. Matthew Shive officiating. Friends may call from 10am until the time of service at 12 noon. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, 7411 Sauk Trail Rd, Sheboygan.
A memorial fund has been established for the National Rifle Association.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Country Side Manor in Sheboygan for their care while he was an assisted care resident and also Advanced Subacute Rehab where he was living for the last year in New Jersey.
The Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Art's arrangements.
