Anna Bohn, age 89, died in her home surrounded by family on Thursday November 16, 2017. She was born January 10, 1928 in Kreutzfeld, East Prussia, to Albert Kutschke and Anna Arendt Kutschke. She and her surviving family fled East Prussia and emigrated to West Germany after the end of WWII. Unlike many East Prussian refugees, they knew to flee their homeland because Anna discovered, while captive in prison camp, that they were all to be deported to the Russian Gulag. She escaped the prison camp in the night and walked unknown miles to return home to alert her family and entire hometown, who successfully fled to West Germany. En route to the west, she contracted typhoid and her mother had to leave her in a Red Cross camp, believing she would die from the contagious disease. Through God's grace, and the strength of her faith and inner character, she survived the illness. After she recovered, she found her family in West Germany.
She married Waldemar Bohn in 1950, and they immigrated to America in 1952, living first in Illinois and then on the farm they bought in Howards Grove, Wisconsin in 1958. In addition to farming beef, they raised 10 children and are survived by 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Anna loved life and she loved the world. Her compassion had no limits. Her reliance on God cultivated a tender heart rather than bitterness or resentment for all the sorrow, pain and loss throughout her life. Those struggles deepened her prayer life and galvanized her to meet loss with generosity, starvation with abundance, and injustice with compassion. Her faith through harrowing life experiences made her the rock of Gibraltar, and her strength brought out strength in others. Her family strive to embody the joy and faith she passed on through her daily life example.
Anna is survived by her children: Berthold of Cheyenne, WY; Arthur (Katie) of Sheboygan, WI; Walter of Howards Grove, WI; Edmund (Janell) of Plymouth, WI; Bernadette (Paul) of Ashland, WI; Christine (Mark) of Sheboygan, WI; Theodore (Gloria) of Madison, WI; Herbert (Deb) of Newton, WI; and Rose of State College, PA. Anna was preceded in death by her husband (of 66 years) Waldemar (2016) and her daughter Barbara Bohn Mueller (1978).
