Alice Marie Scherg passed away on October 15, 2016, at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice at the age of 97. Alice was born in Dotyville Wisconsin to Joseph and Abby Schneider Mertes on June 13, 1919. She attended local schools and graduated at age 16 from St. Mary’s Springs Academy High School in Fond du lac. She then attended the Wisconsin Academy of Cosmetics Art in Milwaukee.
On November 22, 1938, she married Melvin J. Scherg at St. Michael’s Church in Dotyville. WI. They celebrated 40 years of marriage before Melvin passed away in 1978.
Alice’s employment career included being owners of Scherg’s Tavern in Silver Creek Wisconsin, farming in St. Anna, working at Tecumseh Products in New Holstein and retail work at Hill’s Department Store and Arlan’s Department Store in Sheboygan. She was a caregiver for 10 years when her husband suffered a stroke.
Alice enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to Hawaii, Colorado, Florida and Las Vegas with her daughter Diane and son-in-law Wes. She also enjoyed her weekly car trips around the state with her son DuWaine and his wife Corrine. She especially enjoyed the lively cribbage games with her son Delwin.
She is survived by her daughter Diane (Wesley) Heck and her grandchildren, Timothy Scherg, Theresa (Kim) Williams, Tammy (Steven) Kamps, Scott (Bonnie) Heck, Anthony (Corry) Scherg, Allen (Michelle) Scherg, Steven (Valerie) Heck and Brian Heck. Alice is also survived by many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, her sons and daughters-in-law, DuWaine and Corrine Scherg, Delwin and Joan Scherg, her parents Joseph and Abby Mertes, her sister and husband, Kathryn and Alex Leonard and her brother Joseph Mertes.
A memorial service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1132 Superior Avenue. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in Alice’s name.
A special thank you to the staff and residents at Shores of Sheboygan Assisted Living for making her last 3 years there very enjoyable. A very big thank you to the 3rd floor nurses at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center and the staff of the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their loving care and for helping make this time easier for the family. Another thank you to Shallan and Katie from Care Wisconsin who made sure Alice was being well taken care of.
And the biggest thank you goes to Mom for all the love and guidance she has given to all of us over the years. You will definitely be missed.
